Festival Pie Hero entrants rise to the occasion

OR pie hero June 2015Droitwich Spa-based chartered accountants Ormerod Rutter swapped figures for forks as part of their involvement in the town’s popular Food and Drink Festival.

The firm sponsored this year’s hotly contested Pie Hero competition, which attracted savoury and sweet offerings all made locally and nominated by members of the public.

Partner Tony Archer and his fellow judges, British Pie Awards chairman Stephen Hallam, BBC Masterchef judge Charles Campion and BBC Hereford and Worcester presenter Andrew Easton, pictured right with festival organiser Patrick Davies, had the tricky task of selecting the winners at St Andrew’s Town Hotel.

Managing director of pork pie producers Dickinson & Morris, Mr Hallam offered invaluable advice on texture, flavour and fill.

“On behalf of my fellow judges, I’d like to thank everyone who nominated their particular Pie Hero,” said Mr Archer.

“Some of the pies were so nice I could easily have eaten them all and choosing the eventual winners was very difficult as we appreciate all of the hard work involved.”

The overall winner was Spinning Wheel Droitwich’s Steak and Kidney Pie. The best retail pie was Abbey Butchers of Pershore’s traditional pork pie and Pie Creator’s pork pie with rabbit, chorizo and garlic was highly commended. Awards were presented at the official opening of the Droitwich Spa Summer Festival on Saturday, June 20.
