09 Jun CGM blog: (Best) practice makes perfect
The undoubted joy of my weekend was watching my son take two wickets for his junior cricket team.
Playing in a national knockout competition against boys a school year above his age, Nicholas wasn’t expected to play much part but bowled to help his team to victory.
Teresa and I were proud parents. Not because his team won (though that’s always nice) but because it was deserved, earned and a triumph for the effort Nicholas has put in practising to bowl full, straight and on target. They miss, you hit.
The wretched early summer weather has robbed him of team practice and match time – but he’d made it up playing on an Astroturf area near our home.
Now this blog isn’t about cricket, or sport, it is about the value of practice – and having fun.
Nick and I laughed a lot when he tried things out which didn’t quite work. But he kept at it and earned his reward.
In business, how many of us expect the miracle of achieving better results from doing the same things over and over again?
Recognising good or bad habits is crucial, of course. We all see people seemingly sabotaging their businesses by doing the wrong things.
It takes strength of character to say I know what I have been doing isn’t working so I’m going to do something about it. Asking for help, whether it is employing professional advisers or taking training is a good start.
Training is a learning activity. At CGM we’ve witnessed significant growth in the people we train – whether it is our monthly Business Media Club members or folks on our Executive Media Training programme.
Like Nicholas with his bowling, the reward comes not just from learning but repeated practice – and having some fun in the process of course.
My message? Apply some best practice to your business – earn your rewards and enjoy the results.
