Transform your wardrobe without leaving home

Transform your wardrobe without leaving home

A Liverpool-based clothing alterations store has launched a new initiative aimed at breathing new life into wardrobes in the comfort of your own home at a fraction of the cost of a shopping spree.

The Great Wardrobe Refresh is the brainchild of Iain McGuigan, director of The Zip Yard Liverpool South. This environmentally friendly initiative aims to reduce the amount of clothes thrown away which could easily be repaired, altered or restyled.

Based in Allerton Road, The Zip Yard has a team of experienced seamstresses with tape measures, scissors and needles poised to transform perfectly wearable items for all shapes and sizes.

“On average we wear only 20 per cent of the clothes in our wardrobe, which means there are many more items that are unloved, need taking in or out or giving a style makeover,” said Mr McGuigan.

“One of our seamstresses will come into your home at an appointed time and go through the items in your wardrobe with you. They will then do pinnings, assist with restyling ideas and help you unleash the potential of your outfits. A minimum of three items will then be altered or restyled in store and delivered back to you.

“It is extremely important that people feel Covid secure when a member of our team enters their home and they can be assured that we are following strict safety protocols. They will be wearing either a face mask or visor and will have sanitised their hands.”

Mr McGuigan added: “This is the perfect time to launch a new service as the store is generally quieter since we reopened in June and it’s important for local businesses like ours to adapt to the ‘new normal’.”

Extending the life of clothes is The Zip Yard’s mission. More than 300,000 tonnes of used clothing – an estimated £140 million worth – goes to landfill in the UK every year and around five per cent of the country’s total annual carbon and water footprint comes from clothing consumption, according to waste charity WRAP.
