02 Sep Comedy legends reunite for art exhibition
Comedy’s biggest names will be on display at a unique exhibition in London next month.
The Art of Comedy exhibition will showcase sculptor Graham Ibbeson’s original studies of some of the 20th century’s greatest comedians. Laurel and Hardy, Benny Hill, Les Dawson, Norman Wisdom and Ernie Wise will be among those joining Eric Morecambe as part of this original display of sculptured art.
Graham first attended the Royal College of Art’s sculpture school in 1975 and 40 years on the exhibition is being held at The Lavery Room in Cromwell Place, South Kensington.
Event organiser Jim Cadman said: “Graham’s ability to capture the essence of a character with warmth and humanity sets him apart from many other sculptors.”
Graham lives and works in Barnsley, less than 15 miles from Castleford, the birthplace of the late Henry Moore, and both are the sons of Yorkshire coal miners.
“When Henry Moore hosted dinner parties bottles of brown ale as well as wine were placed on the table, reflecting his northern heritage and working class roots,” said Graham, who studied under Professor Bernard Meadows, a renowned sculptor in his own right and the first assistant to Moore.
To continue this theme, Morecambe’s Sunshine Ale will be available for guests to sample.
Half of all net profits from the exhibition will go towards the bronze wall art that is being created by Graham Ibbeson to reunite Eric and Ernie in 2016 to mark the 75th anniversary of Morecambe and Wise’s first appearance as a double act in 1941.
The exhibition runs from October 6 to 8.
