04 Sep CGM blog: Light bulb moments
The thing I love most about delivering media training sessions is when a delegate has a light bulb moment.
We had one at a recent CGM Business Media Club meeting on the topic of PR.
Thoughts sparked in the head of one of our club members, David Emery, owner of architectural practice Virtechs, as he pondered the potential to publicise a ground-breaking project he’s working on.
It could prove to be a genuine game changer for the profile and reputation of his business. “We must talk,” he said… and we did afterwards. A plan of sorts is now being hatched.
Another instance was when CGM’s masterful photographer Alistair Cowin attended a similar meeting about blogging.
Incorrectly, I assumed Alistair was losing interest as he tapped away at his mobile phone during the meeting. He was actually texting me. “I’ve had a light bulb moment – I should have been doing this for ages,” it read.
Yes Alistair, so you should – to recall memories of filming A-list Hollywood celebrities, high-rolling clients and weddings at exclusive venues and to explain the art and practice of your profession.
These instances aren’t confined to our Business Media Club. Delegates who attend our executive and bespoke courses learn varying skills and also develop thoughts on how to spot opportunities and how to use them (the two go hand in hand).
However, in the 12 months since the CGM Business Club was formed there have been many inspiring moments of members taking action on the advice on offer.
Pauline Newcombe, owner of fuel company 3CF, took tips from a meeting about delivering presentations back to her staff who subsequently had their best sales ever week.
Callum Davies, a diligent young marketer, built a personal online job seeking campaign after attending a meeting on a social media. Within a fortnight he was offered three posts.
In September we will celebrate the first anniversary of the CGM Business Media Club – which will be a special meeting on Friday, September 26 to reflect on the past and set a fresh course for the future of the club.
