07 Sep CGM blog: Keep pace with the communications revolution
The CGM Business Media Club returns in September 2015 after the summer break with a fresh way of thinking.
We are now providing a structured programme of learning and development and we’ll be hosting ten annual meetings covering major media, marketing and communications topics and themes at our Birmingham and Worcester meetings.
The focus is on three big areas – Communication, PR and Marketing and Image and Reputation – with three consecutive meetings in each area.
We’re kicking off with communications planning because that is arguably the most important facet of business today.
The world is currently going through a communications revolution – possibly as big as any major phenomenon since industrialisation. We’re all coming to terms with constant change while maintaining long standing fundamentals that are proven to work best in human interaction.
There are infinitely more multifaceted ways to communicate than ever but unless businesses learn to do so effectively and have a clear plan to coordinate and manage their communications they run the risk of falling behind competitors who may seem more proficient and therefore more capable.
Without clear communication, it is hard to win business through sales and marketing and to establish that oh, so important line of profile (being found), being credible (looking a ‘good fit’ for people you want to do business with), and reputation (showing you are good at what you do and are able to write and talk about it).
A communications plan is a vital component in your armoury. It can set in stone strategies to use all the means of communication you need to manage a proficient business.
This shouldn’t be limited to obvious areas such as sales, marketing or PR – it should run across your entire internal and external communications network from making sales calls to settling invoices (why do so many businesses forget to say thanks to people who pay their bills on time?).
Seeing is believing. A communications plan should graphically show all the means of communications you can use – and who you can and need to connect to. You can then set priorities, calculate budgets, organise relevant training for your team and develop timelines, schedule and milestones to achieve specific goals.
It all starts with a plan – which is why we’re launching our new season of the Business Media Club with clear communications planning.
