09 Feb BMC blog: Originality – Take a walk on the wild side
This blog is for the creators, the shakers, the movers, the makers, the disruptors, the innovators, instigators, free thinkers, dare to dreamers and true believers who have faith in who they are, what they do and, indeed, the way they do the things they do – anyone prepared to take a walk on the wild side.
Why? Because we want to set your creative juices flowing. For all the talk of authenticity these days, that too has become a cosy, sometimes smug, marketing buzzword.
So let’s look at what it means to be truly authentic – the real deal – a bit closer?
At the Business Media Club thinking aloud is always allowed. That’s why our 2022 programme is all about shaping and taking One Big Thing to market.
Last month we began with focus on direction, devising your One Big Thing and setting a goal to achieve.
This month (February 2022) we move on to creativity, letting your imagination run wild so you can shape, make and market your One Big Thing – so it is authentic, rooted in your origins, and special enough to say something about who you are and have relevance to others.
One thing is for certain. You won’t find it amid the safety of the pack. Doing the same as everyone else but expecting outstanding results.
Nor will you find among the mainstream. Take the music industry, for instance. There’s not a scintilla of originality among the X Factored talent process where singers (there’s rarely a guitar in sight) parade pleadingly in front of Simon Cowell et al in the hope of being made into a manufactured pop product capable only of performing pale cover versions of battered old hits.
The likes of Bob Dylan, the MC5, Velvet Underground, New York Dolls, David Bowie, the Sex Pistols, Nirvana and other truly original artists who have pointed the cultural way forward can never fit this narrow model. They dare to walk on the wild side.
You can too. You see, being mass market doesn’t work best for everyone. The corporate diktat of big is beautiful simply isn’t true. Specialism – and being specific – is often best. It is procedural too. Before things can go mainstream it is all about connecting with a chosen audience.
The more specific you are, the more focused you can communicate with people who ‘get’ or want your One Big Thing. They too dare to be different or want what you have to offer because it somehow ‘talks’ uniquely to them.
For creative sparks to fly, you must free your mind and step away from rigid conformity. You can only be truly original if you think freely, are able to deconstruct familiar ways of doing things and reassemble them in a fresh, original, different and authentic way.
So forget the magnolia walled, vanilla flavoured marketing mainstream – join the rebel yell of the Business Media Club, where ideas and innovation lead to action and results.
