02 Dec BMC blog: Disrupt and dare to be different in 2020
Busy setting your business 2020 vision?
Business plans aplenty will be littered with the time-honoured cliché and a pun full of endless optimism.
But will you dare to be different to stand out from the crowd in 2020?
That’s when most businesses go all timid, tucking in among the preferred safety of the pack like runners in a 1,500 metres race hoping to cling on in there for the duration so they can sprint for the line down the final straight.
Trouble is, that’s exactly what most of their rivals will try to do too – destined to achieve the same predicable outcome.
Those who stand out (and tend to be eventual winners) are the ones who dare to disrupt.
They don’t wait for a predictable late kick for home. They prefer to give themselves a better chance by disrupting the flow and pace of the race – a fast lap maybe, or winding up from further out than their competitors, possibly even just some clever positioning so they hug the inside track and make others go the long way round.
Being unconventional or just plain savvy can do more than get you noticed.
Let’s face it, anyone can be a jackass to draw attention to themselves. That’s not what disruptive marketing is about.
We’re taught at school not to be disruptive – yet doing things differently is the way we bring about change.
Disrupting is about understanding the rules and deliberately embarking on a different course to adapt, challenge or break conventions – to create refreshing ways to deliver services and products or find new routes to market in order to gain a competitive advantage.
This approach requires imagination and a ‘can do’ attitude. If you adopt a same old, same old attitude, chances are you’ll fail.
And by the time we host January’s Business Media Club meeting, most of those business plans and New Year promises will have been broken or ended up in the bin.
The aspiration was there, the imagination wasn’t.
That’s why we’ll encourage guests and regular attendees to truly start 2020 with a fresh mindset to be disruptive – to shake up what they do, ways in which they can do it and how they can take their ideas to market differently or better than others.
Our first CGM Business Media Club meeting of 2020 is on Friday, January 31 (9.30am-12.30pm) at the CGM Media Centre in Worcester – where thinking aloud is always allowed.
