30 Sep Free your creative self by shaping your message your way
Thank you. Two small words that mean so much.
In saying a big thank you to everyone who attended our Business Media Club sixth anniversary meeting and helping make it so special it is also important to realise we need move things forward.
At the end of a week of anger and confrontation in British politics our meeting focused on shaping the fresh mission, vision and purpose and specifically how our attendees could grow their businesses in 2020 and beyond.
Refreshingly, it showed the benefit of people sharing positive thoughts and ideas. No one saw making money as being their primary purpose.
Instead there was an overwhelming desire to do better, do good and be socially responsible.
This immediately makes your message so much more positive, proactive and appealing – as it is based on values. And that’s where we’re heading with October’s Business Media Club meeting.
Shaping your message, choosing the methods that work best for you and finding the creative time in your busy schedule to create the content you need to promote your business.

Our focus will be on creating intuitive website content.
Getting your message ‘out there’ is about forming connections and marketing the essential culture of your business.
People – whether it is customers, staff, partners, networking colleagues, whoever – can buy into your vision if it chimes with their own thoughts, feelings and aspiration.
Culture is about organic growth and development. We cherish and value true originality.
Authenticity is the next step – being the real deal rather than some catch all, same as everyone else, unoriginal entity with nothing new or different to say or distinguishing features to stand out from the crowd.
Indeed, being creative – and freeing your creative self – is empowering and in our genes.
We’re hard-wired to be both proactive (to make and do things) and creative (we’re artisans at heart). Analogue beings, not digital humans.
It’s also why rail against things that seem to buck the system.
Some digital marketers (not all) would have us believe that we should, broadly speaking, do all the same things to try to buck the system with back end practices as a way to win new business.
This isn’t enough. It is too robotic. This ‘tricking’ people into, say, visiting your website won’t, in itself, turn them into customers or even potential customers.
Photoshopping, for example, implies manipulating, touching up and enhancing original images, which are somehow cheapened as the essential skill needed to take the original image counts for less.
This is alien to our nature.
Culturally, we lost much of our creativity with the emergence of the industrial revolution, the development of mechanised factory production and movement of people from the country into towns and cities and a formation of a socially constructed working week.
Today, we are a largely post-modern society, where many of us we can shape our own ways of working – communicating 24/7, working our own hours, whenever and often wherever we choose, buying, shopping and browsing online, picking and choosing our culture in convenience-led bite sized chunks.

Freeing and being your creative self is about awarding yourself permission to express what is special and unique about your business – then finding time in your schedule to communicate and market it – working on, not in, the business.
Who you are, what you do, how you do what you do and creating features and feelings around this is key.
That means building interaction and engagement – creating positive messages about the way you do business with the most important aim being to build trust and integrity. Nothing matters more.
The next Business Media Club meeting is on Friday, October 25 (9.30am-12.30pm) at CGM Media Centre in Worcester – where thinking aloud is always allowed.
