Trailblazer Teresa joins awards judging panel

One of the UK’s first female sports editors, Teresa Green, was among the judges for this year’s prestigious 2021 British Sports Journalism Awards organised by the Sports Journalists’ Association.

Teresa, who has highly commended in the weekly newspaper sports writer category at the same awards in 1988 and 1998, attended the presentation ceremony at Westminster Bridge Park Plaza in London on March 7, 2022.

“I was thrilled to be invited to be one of the judges and to be part of a process which celebrates exceptional talent in writing, broadcasting and photography,” said Teresa, who also won Newspaper Society and Newsquest sports writing awards during her distinguished journalism career.

“During the event, I was able to catch up with Leon Mann MBE and Anne-Marie Batson, who are doing so much excellent work to promote diversity in the sports media.

“I was also delighted to see one of my broadcasting heroes, Jeff Stelling, receive the Doug Gardner Award for outstanding contribution to sports journalism.”

Other winners on the night included BBC sports editor Dan Roan, Jonathan Liew of The Guardian and Martyn Ziegler of The Times, who landed three awards.

Teresa was sports editor at the Bromsgrove Advertiser/Messenger for 13 years before becoming a sports writer/sub editor at the Sunday Mercury in Birmingham, covering top level football, cricket and athletics.

Along with Chris Green, an award-winning broadcaster, Teresa is now involved in the NewsWise scheme run by the Guardian Foundation which aims to encourage media literacy among young people.
