BMC blog: Why sow the seeds to be the business you want to be?

BMC blog: Why sow the seeds to be the business you want to be?

Being original and authentic to develop a vibrant business culture. Neat grouping of latest marketing buzz words, right?

Wrong. As a cultural studies graduate, let me tell you there’s more to culture than a cute catchphrase.

Let’s start at the beginning. The reason our 2021 Business Media Club programme begins with ‘sowing seeds’ is that you can’t properly market and sell what you do or get your message out there until you fully understand why you do what you do and how it is different to others.

In other words, what floats your boat about it? How you want your business to grow and to function. The values and standards you set.

This is more than an introspective focus on ourselves. More than ever, with successive Covid lockdowns and ‘new normals’ changing our lives, this is an apt time for re-evaluation.

Writ-large, if you don’t have the reason, purpose and passion for what you do, times ahead may well prove tough.

That’s why we need to look within to assess not just if we’re up for the fight, but also at what we genuinely want to achieve.

The emphasis on sowing seeds and going back to your roots so you can grow a vibrant and unique business culture is an organic process – a search for the origins of who you are and what you do – to seek out the source of your originality.

Here’s a fact – no one will ever quite be who you are and do what you do the way you do it or for the very same reasons.

No one can ever have quite the same passion – or be as authentic if you put your own stamp on things.

But none of this counts a jot unless you poinpoint and promote these facets to your advantage by telling your own unique business story, not just in your marketing but the very DNA of your business.

Too many folks copy their peer group then wonder why they don’t stand out.

They miss the most obvious truism – that we are all unique. Sometimes that means going back to source for inspiration.

Cultures are living, breathing things – organisms that grow, multiply, develop. They can grow rude, wild and ugly if unchecked. But with nurturing they can blossom if cropped and clipped, fed and watered, shaped and moulded.

Gandhi wrote: Be the change you want to see in the world. That’s the challenge we will set you in our first Business Media Club webinar of 2021.

We’ll take you back to your roots to see if we can re-discover the origins of your profession, the enjoyment you derive and passion you have for it, the ethics and values that motivate you, the distinct features that make you authentic – the real deal – and how you can fuse (or reconfigure) these facets together into a values-led living, breathing business culture.

Our January CGM Business Media Club meeting is on Friday, January 29 from 10am-midday, (repeated on Thursday, February 4 from 2-4pm) online.
